Faculty Opportunities in Global Health

The Section of Global Health in the Division of Hospital Medicine is launching this program and supports interested faculty. Please feel free to email Ashti Doobay-Persaud, MD with any questions.

This program is intended for Northwestern Medicine faculty members interested in volunteering to provide mindful clinical care at sites abroad. Global health initiatives at many academic medical centers have led to opportunities for trainee physicians and other allied health students to experience healthcare abroad. The trend has created a need for experienced clinicians to serve as preceptors who are qualified both in the scope of their practice and their understanding of the complexities of global health. This program serves as an introduction for physicians with interest in helping address this need. We are launching the international faculty volunteer program at the first selected site (Belize) and we look forward to the development of programs committed to sustainability, equity and education.

We seek to foster longitudinal relationships with organizations that promote equitable and sustainable health care with a focus on local populations.  A period of acclimatization is always necessary when traveling to new surroundings.  In order to make the most of this program, the duration and recurrent nature of visits permit faculty volunteers to learn and grow with the program to optimize their contributions and the quality of their overall experience.  As a best practice, we encourage at least 4 weeks at a site with plans to return to contribute further. The first faculty visits have generated promising results.

Understanding global health and delivery of care in low-resource settings are specialized skills that will complement your medical skills.  An online curriculum has been developed as an introduction to the major topics in Global Health. This educational resource is intended for faculty and students, and should be used by faculty preceptors preparing lectures for students. Please take the time to thoroughly review the material before your visits to ensure the highest quality service from our Northwestern faculty volunteers. Depending on the Department you are affiliated with, there may be compensation for completion of the curriculum and participation in the faculty discussions that accompany the coursework.
