A top regional university in West Africa and one of Africa’s most prestigious institutions of higher education, with an enrollment of 60,000+ students, Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (also known as the University of Dakar) recruits medical students and post-graduate students from all over the region, with large numbers of students from Morocco, Gabon, Ivory Coast, among others. The language of instruction is French and the curriculum is based on the European model, in which students directly enroll in medical school upon completion of their secondary education and their undergraduate medical education continues for seven years. FSM has excellent support from Cheikh Anta Diop University’s Department of Infectious Disease.

Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar has an excellent reputation as one of the top research institutions in the West Africa with a diverse and international student body, and research-oriented faculty in the Department of Infectious Disease. The university has high quality laboratory facilities for the study of HIV, TB, and malaria where students interested in infectious disease research may work. Medical students may participate in clinical rotations at one of two tertiary-care medical facilities while in Dakar. Fann Hospital and Hospital le Dantec are Cheikh Anta Diop University’s two teaching hospitals. Fourth-year visiting students may also have the opportunity to visit municipal medical facilities outside of the center of Dakar for short periods of time (1-3 days) where they may participate in primary care rotations.

Accommodations: While Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar has over 60,000 students it has only 5,000 dormitories and there is much competition for these spaces among the university’s full-time students. Visiting students may stay with host families or rent apartments in Dakar as provided via a third-party service.
