Global Health Hospital Medicine Fellowship
The Global Health Hospital Medicine Fellowship aims to prepare the next generation of physician leaders who hope to improve healthcare across the globe. This fellowship is designed to allow participants to develop an area of concentration and give them the tools necessary to improve healthcare outcomes and systems, work effectively in resource-limited healthcare settings, and perform ethically informed global research and scholarship.
About the Program
Education
Fellows receive funding for the Global Health Leadership Certificate through the Northwestern School of Professional Studies.
In addition, fellows will participate in 1-2 of the following programs depending on focus:
Medical Education
- Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators (FAME) Certificate
- Designing and Implementing Simulation-Based Mastery Learning Curricula through Northwestern Simulation
- POCUS Faculty Development Certificate Program through the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM)
Quality Improvement
- Academy for Quality and Safety (AQSI) Program at Northwestern Medicine (assistance available)
Global Health Rotation
Fellows rotate for 4-6 weeks in Hillside Health Care International Clinic in Eldridgeville, Belize, with primary responsibilities including clinical educator, preceptor, supervision of medical students interested in primary care and involvement in a longitudinal QI project.
Projects and Scholarship
Projects
Fellows participate in 1-2 projects, utilizing global health education ethics guidelines and the framework of community-engaged scholarship, with access to reserach coordinators and biostatistics support provided by the fellowship. Fellows receive mentorship from one primary and one or two secondary mentors for project feedback and professional development.
Scholarly Activity
Fellows will submit 1-2 abstracts for research events and prepare a manuscript for publication. Fellows are required to present work at the annual IGH Global Health Day or Global Health Education Day and one professional national conference. In addition, fellows gain professional society membership to the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), with the option for one further medical education organization.
Clinical Activities
Teaching Activities
Fellows are responsible for medical education and teaching activities, including:
- During rotation, preceptor at Hillside Health Care International Clinic in Belize
- 2-3 resident and medical student lectures
- 2 presentations at the Hospital Medicine Division's journal club or case conference
- Review student abstracts for Global Health Education Day
Eligibility
This is a one-year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship. Eligible applicants must have completed an internal medicine residency and be board-certified and eligible physicians. Candidates should express a commitment to careers in Global Health. Applicants must have U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.
Application Process
Applicants will be reviewed by a committee through a competitive application process, and will be accepted on a rolling basis. The fellowship's clinical hours begin on July 1 annually.
